The Monstrous Regiment of Women

This project investigates how the hysteria surrounding witchcraft led to the persecution, torture, and deaths of tens of thousands of individuals. The witch hunts were a historical period that began around the 15th century and continued until the 18th century, with the majority of the accused being women, many of whom were elderly or economically vulnerable.

This project uses communication design in the form of typography and book design to examine the portrayal of women accused of witchcraft under the Witchcraft Act. I explore the witch trials in England, particularly Jacobean drama, which contributed to the stereotypical image of the witch. I believe this topic represents an underexplored period in history for the women who were accused and convicted under the Witchcraft Act. These women were not witches; they were victims of cruel scapegoating in a patriarchal society that failed them.
